Turn regular reviews into clear actions
Effective risk management
Make effective risk management part of everyday work
Help teams raise concerns, assess them consistently and follow through on actions. Build a review routine that keeps your risk register useful as circumstances change.
-
Identify significant risks
Consider what could stop your organisation meeting its objectives.
-
Check the response
Review the controls in place and the actions still needed.
-
Bring concerns to the board
Use risk reports to guide discussion and decisions.
Turn your risk policy into everyday practice
Effective risk management means people identify concerns, act on them and review what changes. A completed register is a starting point: its value comes from the discussions, decisions and follow-up it supports.
Once your risk management framework and reporting responsibilities are clear, build a routine that teams can maintain alongside their work.
Make it easy to raise concerns
Explain what a useful risk description looks like and how staff should report a new issue. Ask the people doing the work about weak controls, dependencies and near misses. Managers need to respond constructively so concerns reach the people who can address them.
Agree consistent assessment criteria
Use shared definitions of likelihood and impact. Discuss uncertain assessments rather than treating a score as a fact, and explain what makes an exposure acceptable or in need of action. Our five-step process sets out the assessment and review stages.
Build follow-up into team meetings
Give every agreed action an owner and due date. Use routine meetings to check progress, discuss obstacles and decide whether a completed action has made the intended difference. Record the reason when a decision or rating changes.
Review when circumstances change
Set review dates appropriate to the exposure, with additional reviews when a project changes, an incident occurs or a control stops working. Keep the register useful by updating the assessment and response together.
Measure whether the routine is helping
- Are significant concerns raised early enough for a decision?
- Do action owners know what is expected and when?
- Can managers explain why ratings have changed?
- Do board discussions lead to clear decisions and follow-up?
RiskMate supports this work with shared records, action responsibilities and reports on high risks, rating changes and overdue actions. Request a demo to see how it could fit your review routine.
